My Journey with A.C. Milan: An Eternal Fascination
Walking down the memory lane to 1981, a time when a photograph captures a young me in front of the A.C. Milan cathedral waving an A.C. Milan flag, I couldn't resist taking you along on this nostalgic trip. This moment holds a special place in my heart, marking one of the most memorable and enjoyable journeys of my life.
A Coach Trip of a Lifetime
During a two-week coach trip across Europe, I spent a week near the shores of Lake Iseo, passing through eight different European countries on my way to and back from Milan. This holiday, which I often reflect upon fondly, serves as a reminder of the joy and adventure of those times. Although the photograph dates back almost 40 years, it remains a cherished memory, evoking the thrill of the A.C. Milan trip.
Memories and the Attraction to A.C. Milan
The flag I purchased in Milan became a symbol of my affection for the club, a symbol that held significant meaning for me. I held onto it for decades, keeping it as a memento of that great Milan adventure. Unfortunately, the effects of time eventually took its toll, and I had to part with it after three years, as it had become tattered and brittle.
Herbert Kilpin, an Englishman from Nottingham, has a special place in the history of A.C. Milan. He was one of the founders and a player for the club in 1899, when it was known as theldquo;Milan Football and Cricket Club.rdquo; The A.C. Milan supporters still carry flags with his portrait today, a testament to the club's enduring legacy and the respect it garners. This connection to the club's rich history only deepened my love for A.C. Milan.
A Personal Connection with Italian Football
While I may be Australian by nationality, my connection to Italian football runs deep. My family followed Brisbane City Azzuri when they played in the national soccer league from 1977 to 1986. However, my own affinities lie with the results of Australian players playing for Italian club sides. The closest I've had to witnessing a regular connection is during Marco Brescianno's stint at Lazio in 2011, when I found myself rooting for Lazio, despite my shame.
Before that, I followed the results of players at Palermo, Torino, and Parma, including Vince Grella. A particular highlight was James Troisi, who played for Atalanta around 2014, and Carl Valeri at Grosseto and Sassuolo in Serie B.
Reflecting on these experiences, it's clear that my personal connection with A.C. Milan transcends mere fandom. It's rooted in a shared history, a love for the beautiful game, and a special moment in time encapsulated by a photograph and a flag.
